Five persons were packed down to death and three critically wounded after a speeding water tanker hit a private car and then rammed into a bus stand at Sunday afternoon.
A police official told that the wayward tanker driver was trying to overtake a bus when the incident happened. It was the mistake of the driver. He tried to overtake a bus but lost control. The victims were rushed to Delta Surgical SA (PTY) Ltd. where five were declared brought dead, the official said. The dead were identified as RW Alberts, a final year student of Central Johannesburg College, a couple DS De Villers and Kondlo and D Millard, JL Neels.
The two injured identified as Thaddeus Metz and Brenda Stern, the private car driver, are undergoing treatment at hospital and their condition is stated to be critical. The driver of the tanker, Daneel Van, who tried to run away from the spot was caught by a traffic constable who was on the patrol duty in the area,” said a senior police official.
The impact of the crash was so serious that the bus stand was fully destroyed while the railing on roadside was half broken.
